Description: The perinatal period is a time of profound physical, emotional, and psychological change. While pregnancy and the postpartum period can bring joy and excitement, they may also present unique mental health challenges that are often overlooked or misunderstood. This interactive training will provide clinicians with a trauma-informed framework for understanding the complex relationship between pregnancy, childbirth, and mental health.

Participants will explore how physical and medical changes during pregnancy and the postpartum period can influence emotional well-being, learn to distinguish between expected emotional adjustment and symptoms of perinatal mental health disorders, and develop practical, evidence-based strategies for supporting clients with compassion and confidence.

Learning Objectives:

Upon Completion of this course learners will be able to identify:

  • 2–3 physical and medical changes during pregnancy and the postpartum period that may impact mental health.
  • 2–3 symptoms of perinatal mental health disorders from typical emotional adjustment during the perinatal period.
  • 2–3 trauma-informed communication strategies and evidence-based interventions that empower and support clients throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period.
