Description: This course provides a focused review of the ethical principles, legal standards, and professional expectations that guide ethical practice and boundary setting in counseling and social work. Participants will explore common ethical “gray areas,” including confidentiality, informed consent, and dual relationships. Through practical case examples and ethical decision-making frameworks, learners will gain tools to navigate dilemmas, set appropriate boundaries, and protect client welfare across practice settings.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to identify:

  • 2-3 common ethical dilemmas and explain how ethical “gray areas” arise in counseling and social work practice.
  • 2-3 key ethical requirements related to confidentiality, informed consent, and professional boundaries across multiple practice contexts.
  • 2-3 ethical decision-making strategies to support sound judgment, cultural humility, and effective boundary setting while minimizing risk and harm.

IMPORTANT: This training fulfills the Appropriate Professional Boundaries requirement for NYS LMHCs and LCSWs/LMSWs which is required in each 3-year registration period starting April 1, 2023.
